Lineas use case

Context 

Historically a division of SNCB 100% state owned, Lineas was extracted out of the SNCB Holding in 2011 following European subsidiary rules. They recently were privatized and changed their name from B-Logistics to Lineas. Making a fresh start with almost 2000 employees, it took extreme courage and hard work to survive the first years. Today Lineas is one of the most innovative private rail freight operators in Europe with a ‘green and environmental’ focus on multi-modal end-to-end transport. 

Steep Challenge

In 2016, the Head of Software Development asked Steep to assist him in setting up a portfolio and project reporting environment. As reports are the keystones of underlying project and organizational processes, we engaged in the challenge of creating, rethinking or enhancing the processes that enable a professional portfolio and project management. Therefore, we started to work on different axes within the support and business departments. 

Steep Solution

We first implemented the foundations of an ecosystem enabling professional project and portfolio governance. We coached project managers and product owners, initiated time tracking, structured the financial processes of the ICT department and developed the first principles of demand and capacity management. Through several iterations, we helped the IT management to enhance and embed these processes, aiming at an operational governance model that could be ported to the whole company.

Outcome

Today Lineas ICT is implementing the next steps in the governance roadmap, enabling demand and capacity management, providing portfolio transparency to its internal customers, providing the foundations for a trusted partnership. The transparency and governance processes of the portfolio give Lineas the opportunity to prioritize the initiatives with added value, ensuring the growth of Lineas and helping it to stay ahead of the competition.
